HAEMORRHAGIC SEPTICAEMIA
Synonyms
- Pasteurellosis
- Shipping fever
- Stockyardis disease
- Barbone disease
Etiology
- Caused by Pasteurellamultocida.
Susceptible Hosts
- Young cattle within the age of
6 months to 2 years are more often affected.
Mode of transmission
- Direct contact.
- Droplet infection
- Infection may occur to calves
through milk.
Clinical findings
- Incubation period: 2-5 days.
- High rise in temperature
(104-1070F)
- Concurrent shivering.
- Profuse salivation, lacrymation
and nasal discharge
- Sharp drop in milk yield
- Rise in body temperature and
localization of edema in the subcutaneous pockets of head, neck, dewlap
and brisket regions of the body.
- The edematous swellings are hot
and painful.
- The edema produces severe dyspnoea
due to obstruction of respiratory passage.
- Death usually occurs within
20-24 hours.
Treatment
- I/V administration of
sulphonamides (Sulphamethazine @ 150 mg/kg body weight for 3 days or
Sodium sulphadimidine in the similar manner)
- The treatment may also be
rendered with Oxytetracycline @5-10 mg/kg body weight.
- Chloramphenicol @ 10 mg/kg body
weight may also be used.
- Ampicillin @ 10 mg/kg body
weight may also be administered.
Control
- Vaccines can be used.
- Immune serum should be injected
subcutaneously @ 15 ml for cattle upto 300 kg body weight and 20 ml for
buffaloes.
