TRYPANOSOMIOSIS

It is a very serious disease of human and animal in certain regions of the world including India.

The disease is divided into 2 major forms-

  • American trypanosomiasis- Trypanosomacruzi.
  • African trypanosomiasis- caused by other pathogenic trypanosoma

Trypanosoma are flagellated motile protozoan parasites that live in blood and body fluids their host and localize in tissues and are transmitted by Tsetse flies.

Specific Infections

  • Surra-is an acute, sub-acute and chronic disease of mainly horses and camels ,but also in cattle and buffaloes
  • It is caused by evansi

Clinical signs-

  • Intermittent fever associated with trypanosomes in the blood.
  • Edema of dependent parts of the body.
  • Gradual emaciation in spite of good appetite.
  • Nasal and ocular discharge.
  • Progressive anemia, delirium and conclusion.
  • Reduction in milk and capacity for work and a high abortion rate in pregnant females
  • Surra may affect the quality of semen in bull and cause irregular estrus, abortion and stillbirths in cows.

Diagnosis -

  • Trypanosomes are readily seen in blood smears from a animal in the acute phase of the diseases
  • In chronic phase repeated sampling for some days may be required.
  • Animal inoculation test.
  • Treatment-
  • Quinapyraminesulphate @ 4 mg/kg BW
  • Diminazeneaceturate @ 3.5 mg/kg BW deep i/m (1 ml for 20 kg bw)
