Sprinkler irrigation
The system consists of
sprinkler heads or nozzles, which are mounted on risers in lateral lines taken
from the mainline, which is further connected to a pumping unit. This system of
irrigation is suitable for all types of soil and is used mostly when the soil
is too porous, uneven and easily erodible which prevents good distribution by
surface irrigation. This is a water-smart technology that saves 30-50% of
irrigation water in comparison to the surface method of irrigation.Loss of
water through evaporation is restricted to only 2-5% in this method. The
overall efficiency of the system is above 80%.In this system, no land is
wasted on making bunds and channels, and about 40-50% of saving in labour as
compared to surface irrigation.A problem associated with this technology is the
drifting of water during the high wind to the non-targeted areas. The cost of
installation of the sprinkler system is around 0.50-0.70 lakhs per acre.
