Scope potential and limitations

The large scale demonstration conducted by research Institutions indicated a large yield gap among potential (1.1 -1.2 t/ha), demonstrated (0.9-1.0 t/ha) and average yield (0.477 t/ha) of green gram.

The major limitations for cultivating green gram are:

  • Moisture stress during rabi season due to low winter rainfall
  • Various abiotic  and biotc stresses like soil acidity, salinity, cold injury etc. and Yellow Mosaic Virus (YMV).
  • Lack of varieties resistant to various biotic and abiotic stresses
  • Very less use of Rhizobium inoculants.
  • Non- availability of suitable varieties with better yield advantage and desirable characteristics suitable for varied agro-climatic conditions and multiple adversities.
