Sunken and raised bed
Alternate sunken and raised bed
is made by excavating soil of a strip of 5 m, a depth of 20-30 cm and placing
the soil in the adjacent strip (5 m).The height of the raised bed is 40-60 cm
higher than the adjacent sunken bed.As the removal of top fertile soil from sunken
bed creates poor fertility conditions, the application of FYM @ 10 t /ha is recommended.Vegetables like chillies,
brinjal, okra, amaranthus, cucumber, bitter gourd can be grown on beds during
monsoon seasons and long duration paddy cum fish (singhi/ magur) can be
practiced in furrows. To prevent soil erosion from the raised bed, planting of papaya at a distance of 1.5 m is useful.A higher rice grain yield
of about 13-15% is obtained in this system compared to unmodified and
conventional rice cultivation
