Groundwater irrigation has emerged as a major source of irrigation water in agriculture. At present, about 60% of the irrigated area in India is occupied by groundwater irrigation. Irrigation water use efficiency of groundwater irrigation is about 64%. Extraction of groundwater is made through the use of shallow and deep tube wells. Attention is needed to avoid overexploitation of groundwater and saving it more for drinking purposes.
