Contour farming
A simple conservation practice of farming
operation where the plantation is done along the contour and across the slope
called contour farming. This is recommended for 4-6% slope. All the cultural
practices such as ploughing, sowing, intercultural operations are performed
across the slope to reduce soil erosion (by almost 50%) and water loss. Because
of ploughing and sowing across the slope, each ridge of plough furrow and each
row of the crop act as a barrier to the runoff and offer extra time for water
to enter into the soil, thereby reducing the loss of soil and water. Because
of better saving of topsoil, water and nutrient loss, this method enhances
5-10% crop yield.
