Cultivation of edible mushroom is one of the
cheapest and economically viable processes for the bioconversion of
lingo-cellulosic wastes materials in to nutritious human food and animal feed.
In India about 0.13 million tons of fresh mushroom produced annually out of
which share of button mushroom is 73% followed by oyster mushroom (16%), paddy
straw mushroom (7%) and milky mushroom (3%).It is gaining popularity due to its
characters like short production period, suitable for indoor and outdoor
production, eco-friendly, high market demand and protein source for
vegetarian’s peoples.
Nutritional and health value of mushrooms
It is popular for its low calorific value, high biological efficiency, rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Vitamin-D and choline present in mushroom helps in preventing Cancer. Moreover, it contains potassium and vitamin C which helps in regulating blood pressure and decreases the risk of hypertension.
Mushroom farming today is
being practiced in more than 100 countries and the production is increasing at
an annual rate of 6-7%. At present, the total mushroom production of Odisha
stands at 12,334 tons/annum contributing to over 10% of the country's
production.
