Rice-duck farming system
Simultaneous raising of paddy cultivation integrated with ducks yields higher returns. Ducks forage mostly available weeds, duck weeds (Lemna, Wolfia, Azolla etc.), and aquatic weeds from the rice fields. Ducks also consume tadpoles, juvenile frogs, dragon fly larvae, snails and harmful insects and various decomposed organic materials present in the rice field environments. The ducks feed on left away paddy grains on the field. Ducks dropping utilized as organic manure and mobilization of nutrients, and activities (continuous movement, scooping and churning of soil) aerate the rice ecologies which increases the availability of nutrients (like nitrogen, phosphorus and potash) to the rice crops. Water stirring caused inhibition of weeds growth as turbid water inhibits or reduces the photosynthesis of weeds. Their activities also enhance the rice root system, stalk and leaf development, thereby accelerating rice growth. In addition to this rice-duck integration substantially reduces the application of pesticides and fertilizers which provide benefits to the ecological system.
