Tillage

·      The tillage operations, defined as mechanical manipulation of soil, are performed to achieve the desired seedbed to provide optimum environment for seed germination and plant growth.

·      Seedbed preparation for sowing / planting of different crops is done through primary and secondary tillage operations.

·      It involves lot of drudgery to human and animals.

·      The tillage operations have to be completed at proper soil moisture to get better pulverization.

·      The tillage consumes about 10-25% of total operational energy for growing crop.


Tillage operation can be carried out by animal drawn implements or with tractors (35- 70 hp) and power tillers (10-20 hp) by attaching the matching implement to it. The matching implements includes:

M B Plough

Disc plough/harrow

Cultivator

Pulverizing roller

Rotavator

Leveller

Most commonly used are: 1. Two gang notch type disc harrow

                                              2.  Drum type disc harrow
