Cyclone
It is a storm or system of winds that rotates about a centre of low
atmospheric pressure, advances at a speed of about 30 to 50 kilometers an hour,
and often brings heavy rain. Odisha faces moderate
to very severe cyclonic storms at regular intervals as it shares large coast
with the Bay of Bengal. The intensity and frequency of cyclone risk are high in
eight districts in central and coastal Odisha viz. Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh,
Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar. Very often there is severe damage to standing crop, in
addition to the colossal loss of life and properties in these districts.
