Farm yard manure (FYM)
- It is a decomposed mixture of dung and urine of farm animals along with litter and leftover material from roughages or fodder fed to the cattle.
FYM is an age-old practice of Nutrient-Smart technology. Moreover, FYM is a pillar of organic farming.
- Average composition of well-decomposed farmyard manure: 0.5% N, 0.2% P2O5 and 0.5 % K2O.
- All available nutrients in FYM are not readily available to crops; about 30% of nitrogen, 60 to 70% of phosphorus and 70% of potassium are available to the first crop.
- FYM can be directly used for field application in its natural form once it takes 4-5 months for preparation. Partially rotten farmyard manure needs to be applied three to four weeks prior crop sowing/transplanting. However, care must be taken to avoid heavy metal contamination.
- Well decomposed FYM is recommended @ 5 t ha-1 at the time of land preparation for rice crop in the main field before sowing in kharif season.
