It is a storm or system of winds that rotates about a centre of low atmospheric pressure, advances at a speed of about 30 to 50 km an hour or more, and often brings heavy rain. Odisha faces moderate to very severe cyclonic storms at regular intervals as it shares large coast with the Bay of Bengal. The intensity and frequency of cyclone risk are high in eight districts in central and coastal Odisha viz. Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar. Very often there is severe damage to standing crops, in addition to the colossal loss of life and properties in these districts.
